FREE Speaking Practice Script for Kids: "Who Took the Cookie?" 🍪

Perfect for home or classroom! Build confidence, turn-taking, and reading skills with this classic chant.

How to Use:

  • The printed script (for the chant).

  • A "cookie jar" (a box, a bowl, or even a drawn picture).

  • A "cookie" (a toy, a cut-out, or any small object).

  • A group of eager actors!

Game Rules & Instructions:

1. The Setup:

  • Choose one student to be the "Detective." The detective faces the wall (or close his/her eyes tightly—no peeking!).

  • The rest of the students are the "Suspects." They stand or sit in a semi-circle facing where the Detective will be.

  • Place the "cookie jar" with the "cookie" inside somewhere visible to the Suspects.

2. The Heist:

  • While the Detective's back is turned, the Suspects silently and sneakily decide who will be the "Cookie Thief" for this round. Use lots of silent pointing and secret nods!

  • The chosen Thief must very quietly tiptoe to the jar, take the cookie, hide it (in a pocket, behind their back), and return to their spot, trying to look completely innocent. All other Suspects are silent witnesses.

3. The Interrogation:

  • Once the cookie is stolen, the Detective turns around and observes the group. The Detective gets to study everyone's faces for guilty smiles or suspicious clues for a moment.

  • All Suspects (including the Thief) then begin the chant together, using the script: "Who took the cookie from the cookie jar?"

  • The game now follows the script exactly! The Detective will use the script to ask each Suspect, just like in the role-play.

Example:

All Suspects: "Who took the cookie from the cookie jar?"

Detective (pointing to a student): "[Liam] took the cookie from the cookie jar!"

Liam (the Suspect): "Who, me?" (They must act either innocent or guilty—it's up to them to bluff!)

All Suspects: "Yes, you!"

Liam: "Not me!"

   All Suspects: "Then who?"

Once again, all suspects start asking one more round:

All Suspects: "Who took the cookie from the cookie jar?"

Detective (pointing to a student): "[Liam] took the cookie from the cookie jar!"

   If is is correct:

Liam (the Suspect): "Yes, I did."

If the Detective is correct, they get a round of applause! The Thief then becomes the next Detective, or you can choose a new one.

Educational & Social-Emotional Benefits of the Game Version:

✅ Social Observation: The Detective practices reading facial expressions and body language.
✅ Impulse Control: The Thief and Suspects must maintain their "poker faces" and not give away the secret.
✅ Active Listening: Players must listen carefully to follow the chant's rhythm and cues.
